Not only are we conveniently located nearyby, we offer the convenience of various dental services all in one place. Oftentimes, patients must go to various dental specialists to meet their unique needs; we offer a variety of services all in one location:
• Preventative Dentistry: Preventative dentistry refers to the practice of caring for your teeth to keep them healthy. This helps to avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. It’s about maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups to prevent dental diseases before they start or to catch them at an early stage when they are easier to treat.
• Restorative Dentistry: Restorative dentistry focuses on restoring the health and function of the mouth, teeth, and gums. Included in this branch of dentistry are a variety of procedures and treatments designed to repair or replace damaged or missing teeth, correct oral health issues, and enhance the overall appearance of one’s smile.
• Cosmetic Dentistry: Cosmetic dentistry refers to any dental work that improves the appearance of teeth, gums, or bite. It primarily focuses on enhancement in dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment, and overall smile appearance. While traditional dentistry addresses the health of your teeth and gums, cosmetic dentistry focuses on the appearance of your teeth, mouth, and smile. It utilizes advanced technology to offer a range of options for those looking to enhance their smile.
• Implant Dentistry: Implant dentistry is a specialized field within oral health care, focusing on dental implants as a solution for replacing missing teeth. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, typically made from titanium, that provide a strong foundation for fixed or removable replacement teeth. They are designed to match your natural teeth in both appearance and function.
• Emergency Dentistry: Emergency dentistry deals with unexpected dental problems that require immediate attention. These can range from severe toothaches, broken or cracked teeth, to knocked-out teeth and infections. Unlike routine dental check-ups or planned procedures, emergency dentistry is often unplanned and immediate. It’s designed to alleviate pain, prevent further damage, and provide a temporary or permanent solution to the dental issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
For your help and benefit, we’d like to share some of the FAQs we receive here at our Smiles of Groton dental office. If you have additional questions you’re curious about, we would be happy to answer them when you come in to see us.
At What Age Should My Child Start Seeing the Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children start going to the dentist by age one or within six months after the first tooth erupts, whichever occurs first. Primary teeth typically begin growing in around six months of age.
It’s important to start dental visits early because dentists can provide parents with information on proper brushing techniques, the importance of avoiding night-time bottle feeding, and the use of pacifiers. These early visits also familiarize the child with the dental office, reducing anxiety and fear, which leads to stress-free visits in the future.
What Happens in a Dental Exam and Cleaning?
When you come in and see us for a checkup, the process will begin with a physical examination of your mouth. One of our dental hygienists will use a small mirror to check around your teeth and gums for any signs of gingivitis or other potential concerns.
The next step is the removal of plaque and tartar. Using the small mirror to guide them, the hygienist will use a scaler to get rid of plaque and tartar around your gum line, as well as in between your teeth.
After your teeth are completely tartar-free, the hygienist will brush your teeth with a high-powered electric brush. This professional cleaning process uses a gritty toothpaste that smells and tastes like regular toothpaste. This toothpaste gently scrubs your teeth, which is an extra step to remove any tartar left behind from the scaling process.
We will then floss your teeth and the final step of the cleaning process will be receiving a fluoride treatment. This treatment is used as a protectant for your teeth to help fight against cavities for several months.
The dental exam portion of your visit will be conducted by one of our dentists. They will use your cleaned teeth to identify any issues. They will also do an oral cancer screening and examine your neck, jaw, and lymph nodes for any swelling or abnormalities. X-rays might also be taken to get a more detailed view of your teeth and jawbone if needed.
Finally, your dentist will discuss the results of your exam with you. They will highlight areas of concern, discuss potential treatments, and allow you to ask any questions you might have. This is a great time to discuss any oral health issues you have been experiencing or any cosmetic or restorative procedures you might be interested in.
